Chamber Celebrates community spirit on the south side

Celebration of Dedicated Individuals, Food & Festivities

DES MOINES, IA – May 12, 2011 – The South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce celebrates those who give freely of time, talent and energy in the community; as well as individuals who dedicate their time to the education profession, giving of themselves for the advancement of South Des Moines students.

Volunteer of the Year

The annual community award for Volunteer of the Year celebrates the dedication and service of truly outstanding volunteers.  It recognizes the inspiring work of those who donate their time, talents and energy to make our community a better place.  The winner of this award goes above and beyond for the betterment of the Chamber and other community organizations.

Our 2010 Volunteer of the Year, Sherry Fleming spends countless hours volunteering for many organizations in Des Moines in particular her heart is with the kids at YESS, Youth Emergency Shelter & Services.  As a valued employee of the Macerich Company, Sherry receives a corporate grant each quarter to further her goal of kids forgetting their troubles and simply - being kids.  Sherry invites the kids to Southridge Mall to spend gift certificates, eat lunch and sometimes watch a movie.  Recently, the Chairman of Macerich Company contributed a personal check for $2,000 for Sherry to continue her mission of helping kids. 

Educator of the Year

Each year, an award winner is chosen from numerous outstanding educators who demonstrate exceptional or innovative capabilities in their respective education fields.  In addition to being subject-matter experts, nominees demonstrate other teaching-related achievement, such as advising, mentoring, motivating and developing future leaders.

As a positive role model and motivator to area students, we are honored to recognize Shirlee Krouch as our 2010 Educator of the Year.  Shirlee has positively impacted students for over a decade at AIB College of Business.  Throughout her years, she has served in various roles including adjunct instructor, Director for Corporate Training, Director of Admissions, and currently recruits non-traditional students for

evening and online classes.  Shirlee is the founder and sponsor of the International Student Organization.  She is always giving of her time and experience for the betterment of students.
